Communications

Clayton assists organizations and individuals in their communications with the government. These communications services include drafting or reviewing letters to elected officials and public office holders to ensure that the letters are correctly addressed, concise and effective. Fees for drafting or reviewing letters operate on a sliding scale, depending on the nature of the issue and the means of the client. Communications advice is the largest part of Clayton's no-fee practice and comments or assistance are often provided free of charge.

Election Finance

Determining whether a political contribution has been made or whether an election expense has been incurred can be challenging, with serious ramifications. Clayton advises political parties, candidates and third parties on their election finance obligations, including the recording of contributions and expenses, and financial reporting requirements.

Election Advertising

Advertisements that meet the definition of election advertising are subject to regulation in many jurisdictions. Clayton advises governmental organizations, third parties and media organizations on whether certain advertisements should be considered election advertising and what their obligations are with respect to such advertisements. Clayton can also assist with the election advertising sponsor registration process, including the filing of disclosure reports.

Lobbying

Are you uncertain as to whether you or your organization is engaged in lobbying? Unsure whether you are required to register? Do you provide lobbying services, and need assistance with registration? Clayton can help you determine whether or not you or your organization is required to register as a lobbyist, and can assist with the creation and maintenance of your lobbyist registration.

Conflict of Interest and Ethics

Many jurisdictions have complex rules and procedures regarding conflicts of interest for current and former public office holders and lobbyists. Clayton provides advice on conflict of interest and ethics issues, and can assist with the preparation and filing of financial disclosure reports. Clayton also advises former public office holders with respect to their post-employment obligations.

Contested Elections

In every election there are irregularities. Sometimes elections are tainted by fraud or corrupt or illegal practices. When this affects the outcome of an election, the results can be contested.
