Elections Canada Receives Notice of Vacancy in House of Commons for Vaughan

7 September 2010 | By-elections

Following the resignation of Liberal MP Maurizio Bevilacqua, the Speaker issued a warrant on 2 September 2010 to the Chief Electoral Officer indicating that the seat for Vaughan is vacant.

A by-election must be called by the Governor in Council at least 11 days, but no more than 180 days following the receipt of the warrant. The Governor in Council will make an order to the Chief Electoral Officer to call the by-election by issuing a writ of election.

The by-election must be held on a Monday, and must be at least 36 days after the issue of the writ, meaning that the earliest date the by-election can be held is 25 October 2010.
