B.C. Municipalities Reject Extension of City Council Terms from 3 Years to 4
30 September 2010 | Municipal Government
The Union of B.C. Municipalities (the "UBCM") has rejected a resolution that recommended extending the terms for city councillors from 3 years to 4. The vote was 354 against extension to 280 in favour. The result seems to mark the end of the move towards extension, which was recommended by the Local Government Elections Task Force.
The Minister of Community and Rural Development, Ben Stewart, has stated that the province needed clear support from the UBCM electorate in order to proceed with the extension. With the majority of the UBCM electorate in favour of keeping 3 year terms, it is unlikely that an extension will be part of the local government elections reform bill that will be introduced in the upcoming session of the legislature.
