Elections Canada Publishes Preliminary Election Expense Limits for By-elections on 29 November

30 October 2010 | By-elections, Election Finance

Elections Canada has published the preliminary election expense limits for the three federal by-elections on 29 November 2010, which apply to political parties and candidates.

The election expense limits are calculated under section 422(1) of the Elections Act (Canada) (the "Act") for political parties and under section 441 of the Act for candidates. Election expense limits for federal elections are based on the number of names on the lists of electors for each electoral district.

The preliminary limits are calculated using the preliminary list of electors for the electoral districts. The final limits are calculated using the revised list of electors.

The Chief Electoral Officer is required under section 105(2) of the Act to publish the revised list of electors not later than seven days before polling day.

If there are more electors on the revised list than the preliminary list, then the election expense limits will be increased accordingly. If there are fewer electors on the revised list, the expense limits remain unchanged and become final.

The list of final election expenses limits will be available on 23 November.

Here are the preliminary election expense limits:
