Saskatchewan to hold By-election in Saskatoon Northwest on 18 October 2010

On 31 August 2010, Saskatchewan Party MLA Serge Leclerc resigned his seat for Saskatoon Northwest by sending a letter to the Speaker in accordance with section 40(1)(b) of the Legislative Assembly and Executive Council Act (Saskatchewan) (the "Act").

Pursuant to section 46 of the Act, a by-election must be held within six months after a seat in the Legislative Assembly becomes vacant.

On 20 September 2010, the Lieutenant Governor in Council ordered that the by-election for Saskatoon Northwest be held on 18 October 2010. This 28 day campaign period is the minimum required by section 31(2) of the Election Act (Saskatchewan).

Elections Saskatchewan has prepared a handy election calendar for this by-election, which includes important dates such as nomination day and the dates of advance polling.

In accordance with section 31(3)(b) of the Election Act (Saskatchewan), nomination day for candidates is on 2 October 2010, which is at least 16 days before polling day.
