United Kingdom Government Announces Wording of Electoral Reform Referendum
22 July 2010 | Electoral Systems
The BBC reports that the UK Government has published the question for the proposed referendum on electoral reform which would be held on 5 May 2011.
The full text of the question is: "Do you want the United Kingdom to adopt the 'alternative vote' system instead of the current 'first past the post' system for electing Members of Parliament to the House of Commons?"
The referendum will be held if the U.K. Parliament passes the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill. Passage of the bill is quite likely as the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats, while taking different positions on whether the referendum should pass, are both committed to the referendum process.
