New Lobbying Rules in Effect for Senators, MPs and Leader of the Opposition Staff

20 September 2010 | Lobbying

The Honourable Stockwell Day, President of the Treasury Board and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway announced that new lobbying rules affecting Senators, all MPs and senior staff in the offices of the Leader of the Opposition have come into effect as of today.

These parliamentarians and staff have been added to the definition of "designated public office holder" in the Designated Public Office Holder Regulations.

Under section 10.11 of the Lobbying Act (Canada), these parliamentarians and staff will now be prohibited from registering as a federal lobbyist for five years after their last day in office.

In addition, the detailed monthly lobbyist reporting requirements for designated public office holders now apply to these parliamentarians and staff.

I am preparing a legal bulletin to provide guidance to anyone who lobbies parliamentarians or senior staff in the offices of the Leader of the Opposition to help them comply with the new reporting requirements. This bulletin will be posted later this week.
