Elections Quebec to Investigate Contributions to the Parti Quebecois for Potential Violations of the Elections Act

16 July 2010 | Election Finance

Cyberpresse reports today that the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer of Quebec indicated that it will investigate whether 4 political contributions made to the Parti Quebecois were in contravention of section 87 of the Election Act (Quebec), which requires that only electors may make contributions.

The 4 contributions at issue were made by individuals. However, the individuals listed their business address as opposed to their home address when completing the donation. This raised questions as to whether the contributions were made by the individuals or by their businesses.

In a similar scenario involving a Quebec Liberal Party MNA, Elections Quebec investigated and ruled that contributors who had listed their business address had simply made an administrative error.

A spokesperson for Elections Quebec has indicated that they will likely require the contributors to make a sworn statement that they made the donations with their own money and not that of their business.
